Julian Rossi recognized his wife by the way she protected her stomach before he recognized her face.

A guest stepped around the housekeeping cart, nearly catching her with a suitcase. The woman kneeling beside a spilled drink shifted backward, one raw hand moving over the curve beneath her gray uniform.

“Careful,” Julian said.

She looked up.

Eight months of anger vanished before he could take another breath.

“Elena?”

Beside him, Camila stopped talking about their dinner reservation.

The Grand Alcazar’s lobby glittered around them—crystal chandeliers, polished stone, windows overlooking the California coast. Julian had entered thinking about a real estate acquisition.

Now he couldn’t remember why he was there.

Elena gripped the cart and stood slowly.

“Good evening, sir.”

Sir.

He had searched hospitals for this woman. Called her friends. Spent nights staring at the empty side of their bed.

“What happened to you?”

Her eyes moved to Camila’s hand on his arm.

Then back to him.

“Please let me finish my shift.”

“Do you know her?” Camila asked.

Julian barely heard her.

“Elena, where have you been?”

“You need to lower your voice.”

“And you need to tell me why you disappeared.”

Her fingers tightened around the cloth.

“Disappeared?”

Something in her expression made him hesitate.

Camila stepped closer. “This really isn’t the place.”

Elena looked at her with a recognition Julian couldn’t understand.

“No,” she said. “I guess it isn’t.”

A housekeeping supervisor approached, assessing the spilled drink, the abandoned cart, the gathering attention.

“Elena?”

“I’m sorry, Rosa. I’ll clean it up.”

Rosa took the cloth from her.

“Go sit down.”

Julian reached toward Elena’s elbow. She stepped away.

He stopped immediately.

“Can we talk? Somewhere private?”

For several seconds, she studied him.

Then she nodded.

“Rosa stays.”

They sat in a small office behind the reception desk. Camila followed, but Elena stiffened in the doorway.

“Not with her.”

“Julian,” Camila said, laughing once. “Seriously?”

He looked at Elena’s trembling hands.

“Wait outside.”

Camila’s smile disappeared.

Rosa closed the door.

Julian sat across from his wife.

“How far along?”

“Thirty-seven weeks.”

He did the math without wanting to.
